(EDITOR’S NOTE: Boston-born Keith Elam, who rose to fame as Guru, founder of the rap group Gang Starr and a person who sought to merge rap and jazz, died earlier this week. His brother, Harry, a distinguished professor of drama at Stanford, has written this remembrance).

“Positivity, that’s how I’m livin..” So goes the lyric from my brother’s early hip-hop song, “Positivity.’ My brother Keith Elam, the hip-hop artist known as GURU-Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal-died this week at the too-young age of 48 because of complications from cancer. ‘Positivity’ was what he sought to bring to the music and to his life, and for me that will be a large part of his legacy.

In February of this year, my brother went into a coma, and I traveled across the country from my home in California to see him. At his bedside, I stood and stared at his overly frail frame, his head that he had kept clean-shaven for the last 20 years uncommonly covered with hair, his body connected to a sea of tubes and wires. I listened to the whirl of machines around us and took his hand. As I did, my mind flashed back to now-distant times, so many memories. And I saw us as teenagers at the beach on Cape Cod playing in the water together. And I saw us as boys, driving to school. My brother was five years younger than me, so we attended the same school only for one year — my senior year, his seventh-grade year — at Noble and Greenough School, and I would often drive us both to school. Invariably, I made us late, yet my brother, never as stressed as me, was always impressively calm. At school he endured the jests and teasing from the other boys about being my “little brother.’ I was president of the school and had charted a certain path at Nobles. But my brother found his own creative route at school, as he would throughout his life. His journey was never easy, never direct, but inventive. Through it all he remained fiercely determined with a clear and strong sense of self.

Over the years I had proudly watched my brother perform in a wide variety of contexts. While at Nobles, we had a black theatre troupe known as “the Family.’ In 1973, we put on a play entitled ’’A Medal for Willie,’’ by William Branch, and because he was only in the seventh grade, Keith played only a small role, but even then you could see his flair for performance, his comfort on the stage. At home, our older sister Patricia would teach him the latest dances, and he would execute them with verve as I watched from the sidelines, impressed with his moves, and not without a few twinges of jealousy since I’ve always had two left feet. As a teenager he raced as a speed skater. I do not remember how he became involved in the sport; I only remember traveling with my family to watch his meets in the suburbs of Boston. I do not remember if he won or lost, I do know that he always competed with great ferocity and commitment.

When he announced to me that he was dropping out of graduate school at the Fashion Institute of Technology to pursue a career in rap, I thought he was making a grave mistake and warned him against it. But as always he was determined, and in the end he would succeed beyond perhaps what even he had imagined. Early on in his rap journey, he visited me in Washington., D.C., over a Thanksgiving weekend. I was teaching at the University of Maryland then, and we went to what was perhaps the most dreadful party we had ever attended. As we hastened out the door, I apologized for bringing him to this party. My brother replied “let’s write a rap song about it,’ and we did. The lyrics made us laugh as we collaborated on the rhyme scheme and rode off into the D.C. night. It is one of my fondest memories, this spontaneous brotherly moment of collaboration and play.

Keith’s big break came with Spike Lee’s film ’’Mo’ Better Blues,’’ with his song “A Jazz Thing’ underscoring the credits. I watched that film over and over again just to hear my brother at its end. Soon he was on to creating his first Jazzmatazz album with others to follow, and he became credited for creating a fusion between jazz and hip hop. To be sure, that fusion owes something to our grandfather Edward Clark and Keith’s godfather, George Johnson, who introduced Keith to jazz by playing their favorite albums for him. He credits them both on his first Jazzmatazz. That first Jazzmatazz album featured musical heroes of my youth, Roy Ayers, and Donald Byrd, and here was my brother featuring them on his album. And with this success, came tours. I have seen him perform all over the world, and each time he would give a shout out from the stage to his brother and my wife, Michele. And I was so proud. It sometimes struck me with awe that all these people were there to see my brother. I watched him deal out magic; he was in his element feeling the crowd, and them responding to his groove. This was my baby brother, the kid with whom I once shared a room. The kid whose asthma would cause him to hack and cough and wheeze at night keeping me up. But when I would complain, my parents would send me out of the room. The message was clear: Love your siblings, whatever their frailties. Shorter than me and slighter of build, my brother suffered from asthma and allergies his whole life, but he was always a survivor

Back in 1993, when he played at Stanford University, I was in perhaps my third year as a professor there. As I walked into the auditorium that night, the assembled audience of students looked at me with a new awareness, “that’s the Guru’s brother,’ not that’s Professor Elam, but the Guru’s brother.

And I was, and am, the Guru’s brother. I admired and loved him deeply, my little brother. And I was and am so proud of him, and how he made his dreams reality . And with the outpouring of love that has crowded my e-mail with his passing, I know that he touched so many with his music. My brother cared deeply about family. He raps of my parents in more than one song. They are featured on his video “Ex girl to next girl.’ It was one thing seeing my brother on MTV; it was another seeing my parents. His son K.C. was the joy of his life.

The doctors told me back in February that there was not much chance of my brother recovering from the coma. But my brother has always been a fighter, always been one to overcome surprising adversities, so this seemed just one more. We prayed that he would again prevail. But it was not to be. Still his drive, his spirit, his energy, his positivity will live on, and so will his music. “that’s how I’m livin’

Comment ne pas évoquer Mic Geronimo sans le Masta I.C., une espèce de fracture dans le temps, comme si Buckwild en saissisant la boucle de Gene Harris avait réussi à créer une brèche en concoctant un beat hypnotique dont la lenteur se fait ressentir, tels les effets secondaires de la codéine, tant adulé par le regretté DJ Screw.

Freddie Hubbard - A Jazz Giant 1938-2008

Jazz legend Freddie Hubbard passed away in L.A. [december 29] – one of the most prolific trumpeters in the bebop, hard bop and modal styles from the 1960s to today -

Hubbard was a sideman to some of jazz’s most recognizable musicians including Bill Evans, Herbie Hancock, Hank Mobley, Dexter Gordon and Wayne Shorter. He also played with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers.

Hubbard’s albums as a leader include Open Sesame, which he recorded on the premiere Blue Note record label when he was only 22. Other recordings include the albums Goin’ Up, Hub Cap and arguably his best album, Ready for Freddie.

This year 2008 is near finished with some bad news : recession, unemployment is growing, Mid-East still under fire, 8 years of a republican policy (until 2012 here in France). :: 1st of all I was totally disappointed by the NY's Finest made by the Soul Bro' so I was still waiting for the next D.I.T.C. and when it was released ... oh shit ! 45 sec after listening briefly all the tracks this album was going straight to the garbage .. Oh yeah, i'm dead serious son! I don't know what happened to veterans Hip-hop producers like Lord Finesse and others producers like the Double D (Huge Hefner) & Pete Rock ? althought Pete's treatment has some good points ... only Preemo keeps providing dope beats and stay steady.

Très grand classique mid-90's à la production minimaliste mais efficace ! une époque marqué au fer rouge par le Boom-Bap ce fameux pattern rhytmique sans concession que Preemo nous délivre en programmant cette généreuse ligne de basse où chaque grosse kick et snare suinte le sillon du vinyl - il faut dire que le son propre ça n'a jamais été le soucis de C. Martin - des boucles de batteries bien crades et lourdes bon sang ! c'est bien ce qui manque aujourd'hui à l'heure de la numérisation et de l'aséptisation des beats ne parlons même pas de la généralisation des claps et des 3 notes de synthés distordues que l'on nous sert à longueur de journée, de la vulgaire Fast-Food Music.

GrandMasta B & Jeru Da Damaja

Pour revenir au concerné, Mr Chris Parker, sa prestation lyrciale parle d'elle même au passage clin d'oeil au GrandMasta B a.k.a. "Bud" alias David Faustino échappé de "Marié deux enfants" (Married … with Children) qui fait une appartion aussi discrète que fut sa carrière de MC à l'instar de son confrère Brian Austin Green du 90210 dont je ne suis pas un fan de la première heure en dépit du fait que j'avoue avoir apprécié la série sic c'est dit !

malgré une qualité indéniable au niveau des beats - avec entre autre la collaboration des clowns du rap B.E.P. - la dure loi des quartiers riches, en l'occurence ici Beverly Hills, nous prouve qu'elle laisse plus de chance à un gus derrière ces machines plutôt que derrière un mic' demandez à Alchemist ... You Must Learn !

Funky spaciness from one of the 70's best arrangers! The set's a largeish orchestral work dedicated to Dune and other sci-fi books and films. Sounds goofy, but it's pretty darn great -- and Dave Matthews takes his work with James Brown and makes the whole thing come out pretty darn funky. Includes the massive "Sandworms".

David Matthews gathers an incredible collection of artists to collaborate on interpreting the sci-fi masterpiece, Dune. Some of the greatest in the field add their flavor to Matthews' vision. Jazz fans will be delighted to hear Grover Washington Jr., David Sanborn, Eric Gale, Hiram Bullock, Randy Brecker, Andy Newmark, Steve Gadd, Mark Egan, even a young Will Lee riffing. The music style is dated, but true fans will enjoy!

Initialement sorti en '97 sur mix-tape sous le fameux titre "Pour tes oreilles" NY City Undaground & Independants Best Of 1997, gracieusement décortiqué par Chimère de Famille™ ci-contre. Wuurrd Up Somno !

Désormais à nouveau disponible sous la forme d'un double CD intitulé Best of, mais ici parlons plutôt d'un Must de ce que le vivier indépendant a engendré de meilleur durant cette période charnière du rap N.Y. Vous remarquerez d'ailleurs le clin d'oeil au visuel de la première jacket qui reprenait le Héros déchu de Mike Mignola.

En plus du tracklisting d'enfoiré qui avait fait péter plus d'une durite aux b-boys férus de l'indépendant new-yorkais, on se rappelle aussi avec nostalgie de ce bon vieux poste qui en a bouffé de la bande magnétique et cela au sens propre comme au figuré à ma grande décéption le rafistolage de K7 ( à base de scotchs / ciseau et agrémenté d'une bonne prise de tête lorsque l'on découvre avec effroi que 16 mesures ont sautés au passage ! ) était devenue une de mes spécialités ... en particulier la tape # 3 mixé de main de maître par Logilo excusez du peu ...
Décidément, ces maudites galettes de cire qui ont bâti la Bad Reputation du Pétro Millionnaire - non en francs CFA mais en commentaires (cf. myspace) - continuent encore de mettre dans le rouge les PayPals des cybers diggers et d'alimenter les billets des crate bloggers.
* Toujours pour info, les 2 faces de 45 minutes sur cette version CD contiennent 13 titres supplémentaires, de quoi ravir les Narcotics "Brothers" Addicts.

Like Nas in NY State of Mind I don't know how to start ... first of all let me present the best hiphop group to you than France knew ... so many things to say and as you know the english isn't my native tongue... Well, I got to do it in french so prepare your dictionnary : Après que Gué Gué et Egosyst aient fait la connexion, Booba et Ali débutent en traînant avec le Coup d'État Phonique.

Quand ces derniers ont intégré la Cliqua, les 2 têtes grillés les ont suivis. Puis, rapidement ils créent le duo Lunatic et intègrent le Beat de Boul.

Là, le public commence à les découvrir avec l'apparition de Booba sur le maxi "Tout le monde... " ("Tu sais qui c'est Booba C'est comme ça qu'on m'appelle B.2.O.B.A mon gars c'est comme ça que ça s'épelle") et surtout l'apparition sur une mixtape violente de Cut Killer (N°13, Spécial Lunatic). Ils s'étaient déjà démarqués de la masse avec des lyrics originaux (à l'époque, en fait, il n'y avait que de la poésie) et surtout une nouvelle conception de la notion de flow.

Durant cette période, ils ont fait beaucoup de concerts et ont même élaboré un album (qui n'est jamais sorti) avec des morceaux produits par Zoxea. Il y avait des cuts qui étaient dénaturés par l'ingérence des Sages Po(ce qui a poussé le groupe a refusé de faire sortir l'album parce qu'il ne leur ressemblait pas). Divergences avec les Sages Po, donc ils quittent, à regret, le Beat de Boul (même si leurs partenaires de la Malekal Morte y sont restés) pour intégrer Time Bomb (aprés un bref passage dans un label de transition).

C'est durant cette période que le mythe Lunatic va se créer. Dans ce crew, ils vont avoir le contrôle total des textes et le son est géré par Dj Mars, Ke-C et Géraldo.

Là, ils ont écrits des textes bien street qui ne pouvaient être totalement saisi que par un public mûr et qui leur garantissaient un non - passage à la radio (sauf dans les émissions spécialisées).

Avec l'écurie Time Bomb (X-Men, Oxmo Puccino,Hifi ...) ils permettent au Rap en Français de rentrer dans une nouvelle ére grâce à ces textes bien violents, fidèles au bitume ("parler de la rue à chacun de mes textes et alors") et surtout en apprenant au public ce qu'est un flow ("Vas y fait le faux kiffes le flow en douce").

Sur une production de Dj Mars, ils font leur premier classique sur la compil' Hostile "Le crime paie" qui aujourd'hui encore est considéré par beaucoup comme le morceau de référence du Rap en Français.

Ils enchaînent sur la compil "L.432" avec un autre classique "Les vrais savent".

En plus de cela ils vont devenir incontournables pour ceux qui habitent la région parisienne car ils enchaînent les freestyles de folie sur la radio Générations 88.2 que ce soit chez Marc ou JP Seck. Cette période bénie va prendre fin avec l'arrêté de l'injustice qui va mettre Booba hors - circuit, suivi de l'implosion de Time Bomb.

"Seul", Ali se préserve (malgré quelques apparitions dont le terrible freestyle à fun ou le morceau avec Loudness) et attend le retour de son acolyte. Mais comme les rappeurs français (bons ou mauvais) font un blocage sur leurs morceaux, on a pu écouter du scratch de Lunatic sur plusieurs disques.

Pour son retour, dans le rap game, Booba fait sensation avec un freestyle de folie (avec Mala Malekal) sur sky durant la semaine des X-Men. La suite est la sortie du troisième classique "Civilisé" produit par Cris. C'est le début de l'ère 45 Scientific pour les Lunatic, une sorte de reconquête du trône, même si il n'y a jamais eu de roi. Nouvelle ère, celle du premier album "Mauvais Oeil". L'album tant attendu (depuis 4 ans) sort enfin. Leurs apparitions se font plus rares. Presque plus de radio, 2 mixtapes, et 1 collaboration sur le maxi du comité. Cette discrétion durant la préparation de leur album n'a fait qu'amplifier l'impatience. "Si tu kiffes pas t'écoutes pas et puis c'est tout"

Lunatic - "Mauvais Oeil" (2001) The Evil Eye

This is one of the best french rap songs ever, these dudes are two muslim cats (from Africa - Ali is from Morocco and Booba from Senegal by his father and Morocco by her mother) that are on that gangsta shit but still remain conscious with deep lyrics. I've uploaded their only album in a second so y'all can have a better idea, that album is named "Mauvais Oeil" ("the evil eye"). Booba, the one further on the left at the start of the video, is the french cat in Tony Parker's video and has now turned into the french 50 Cent.
Currently, Booba is following a solo career since he lefts the 45 Scientific which was built and made up of J-P Seck (a journalist well respected as Jeff Chang or Bilal Allah in US Rap Pages), Ali & Booba, Géraldo (producer).
Now, Booba is doing some bling bling tracks before he lefts the label he dropped a dope album named "Temps Mort" Time's Up in 2002 and Ali is still focus on the Real - he released in 2005 an Excellent solo album "Chaos & Harmony"

Bahamadia très bonne MC ... enfin je voulais dire très forte MC dans la frange du rap féminin peu peuvent prétendre avoir autant de respect et de talent sauf peut-être : Rah Digga ou Sondjah Blade on pourrait rajouter aussi rajouter Rita J (du groupe All Natural très, très forte !! le morceaux "Dreams and Aspirations" est fortement recommandé). Quant à Bahamadia, on l'oublie souvent lorsque l'on fait l'inventaire des crews, mais elle faisait partie de la désormais mythique GangStarr Foundation.

45 KING feat LAKIM SHABAZZ - THE 900 Number EP 1992

Aie !! aie !! Mark The 45 King est l'un des pionners du mouvement Hip-Hop en matière de prod, si l'on compte avec lui l'excellent Marley Marl à cette époque faut dire que les mecs ont quasiment tout inventé pour les générations à venir à l'époque où la MPC 60 n'était pas encore sortie des usines AKAI les beatmakers se grattés la tête sur une SSL et une boîte à rhythme (TR 808 / 909).
L'originalité de Mark et ce qui à fait sa force en matière de son est qu'il puisait sa source via des samples dans des vieux 45 tours auxquels personnes ne prêtaint attention, car les mecs étaient bien trop occupés à dépouiller la collection de disques de leur parents...
Donc, forçément on passe à côté de belles pièces à digger pour finir en loop, comme la célèbre boucle que l'on retrouve avec le déjanté DJ Kool "Let me clear my throat" (1) ou sinon le "Best kept secret" de Diamond D.

The Jazz Liberatorz hit us off with yet another really solid 12"-this time featuring members of the Pharcyde on a cut called, "Ease My Mind" and on the B-side you have Raashan Ahmad from Crown City Rockers doing a song called, "Cool Down".
The cover was made to look like one of those old records from the Black Jazz catalogue. Highly recommended, si comme moi vous appréciez les sets jazzy de DJ Damage anciennement couche tard chez Cut Killer dans le BUMRUSH.
Je sais, je sais ...c'est skyrockien fuckdat !! mais l'émission était forte surtout quand DJ Pone et Damage se relayés au début du show.

Comme à son habitude, Lord Finesse nous délivre un classique avec en feat. Grand Puba des Brand Nubian, quand ce n'est pas une combinaison Diamond D / Sadat-X; et je dois dire que ce genre de collaboration marche plutôt bien.

En 1994 il s’achètent ses propres Technics MK2 et développe dès lors sa passion pour le Djing influencé par Dee Nasty et Cut Killer pour la scène française ainsi que par Dj Premier, Rob Swift, Q-Bert et Revolution notamment outre atlantique.

Qu'est ce que j'ai kiffé ce 12'' !!! un pur track dans la veine des prods soul-jazzy typiquement mid-90's produit par l'excellentisme Peter Philipps sur la désormais mythique SP1200 - d'autant plus, j'avoue me mettre l'original en boucle qui est tout aussi bon si vous êtes dans le genre crate digger (écouter la "main version" puis chercher l'"original"(1) pour voir quelle a été la part du travail fournit par le beatmaker ;)

Le jeune homme est presque "bien née". Il a hérité de l'immense collection de disques de son père DJ qui lui interdisait d'y toucher avant qu'il ne révèle de véritable talent pour la production. Ses disparitions dans la cave de son cousin pour produire inquiétaient sa mère.... Car il a pour cousins Grand Puba (de Brand Nubian) et Heavy D (président du label Uptown). De même, il a pour mentor Marley Marl, grand prêtre de la production avec lequel il a co-animé les émissions cultes "In Control", puis Future Flavors". Mais ce "background" n'explique pas tout. Pete is the golden child. Il possède "l'âme soûl", le trait qui permet à peu d'élus de convertir leur passion en réalisations parce qu'il la comprenne, l'étoffe plutôt que ne l'exploite.... "J'ai commencé à jouer des disques depuis mon plus jeune âge vers 7 ans. J'observais faire mon cousin. Nous faisions des cassettes dans la cave et de là j'ai continué. Je dirais que c'était une question d'ambiance. J'ai été inspiré par mes fréquentations, par mon grand-père qui aimait beaucoup le jazz. La connaissance musicale et la connaissance des instruments de mon grand-père et de mon père m'ont permis d'appréhender la musique. Parfois les instruments te parles sans dire un mot. Avoir un parent qui sait ce que veut dire le jazz, et qui soit capable de te le faire partager est divin. Screwball est un quatuor de rappeurs hardcore originaire de New York.
Composé de Poet, Solo, KL et Hostyle. A la fin des années 80, Poet fait partie du duo PHD et Solo et KL forment Kamakasee. En 1993, les quatre rappeurs s'associent sous le nom de Screwball pour enregistrer l'album "Set it" produit par Poet. Le groupe fait des apparitions sur la scène underground et indépendante avant de sortir en 1999 l'album Y2K.
